PLEASE READ! BONES ARE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR DOGS LIFE.

My husband and I had to go away on business for a few days so we had my brother Charlie babysit our 3 dogs, Raven-hound mix pit, Bubbles-Jack Russel, and Lucky-Pit Bull.

We all miss our pets when we go away as we know our pets miss us. We got a good report from Charlie. He said the dogs had no accidents and they were very well behaved.

I had to go to the store to pick up some items and since the dogs were so good I wanted to reward them with a special treat. As I scanned the pet aisle I noticed a bone I had never seen before. It was about 4 inches long with meat filled in the middle. I thought perfect. They normally get Milk Bones, this will be a nice surprise, and I know they will love it.

When we got home, the dogs were all excited to see us as we were to see them. I kept telling them “We have a special treat for you.” As usual they were jumping up and down and running all around. I gave the dogs their bones and they all ran to eat them.

At first everything seemed normal, the dogs ate, played, went outside, & slept. The second day Raven and Bubbles were doing their normal routine but Lucky just wanted to sleep. I brought food and water to Lucky and she would only drink the water. Ever since we found Lucky she has been always been a little afraid to go outside by herself. Or if she hears a strange noise she will run for the door. We still never found out what happened to Lucky when we found her but she's doing great with the 3 legs she has. So when she has to go out I walk with her. We live on 5 acres so she can pretty much go where she wants but she decides to stay by her mommy, which I love.

I was starting to get worried it had been almost 2 days and Lucky only wanted a little water. When she would go out I would follow her and she would run to a part of the grass and go pee pee then she would try to go poopy. Over and over again she did this. She looked so miserable. I called God's Creatures and they told me to bring her in tomorrow.

It was around 5:30 and I just did not know what to do so I called our local Feed Store to see if they had any advice. They told me to give her baby laxatives and maybe an enema. That is exactly what I did but the baby laxative did not work. It was very heart breaking to watch Lucky run across the yard constantly trying to go to the bathroom, seeing the pain in her eyes, and the discomfort she was going through.

When my husband Scott got home I filled him in on what was going on and he witnessed what I had told him. He told me that he felt so very bad for her and that we should try the enema. That is exactly what we did Lucky stood in between Scott's leg and I shot a little in her behind then she ran off. We both thought for sure she would go but after running back and forth a couple more times she ran in between Scott's legs. As to say “Do it again” So I shot some more up there, this time I gave her a little bit more. She continued to run back and forth and again nothing. So we said that's enough. She needs rest. We brought her inside and gave her some water and some thing to eat. She only drank a little water. I even bought different types of Dog food but everything we tried did not work. We just had to wait until morning.

It was around 3:00 am in the morning and I slept in the living room so I could keep an eye on Lucky. What happened next I was not prepared for. I could hear her nails on the tile floor she was running by my chair. Then she made this loud sound like a water balloon crashing to the floor and instead of water flowing out of it blood was gushing out. I jumped up out of the chair and ran to her. The expression on her face was a look of confusion and relief. But it did not stop there. It seemed like she had gas and with each push a gush of gooey blood came out, with a horrible fowl smell. At last she stopped and just laid down. I thought oh my goodness my poor baby is going to die. I hurried and grab paper towels. I wiped up all the gooey blood and found hard fragments in it. I put all of it i n a zip lock bags to bring to the vet. Then I laid on the floor with Lucky.

It seemed like hours and hours before God's Creatures opened. But we finally made it. Oh the relief I felt knowing that I did all I could and now it was up to the Professionals to let me know what was happening. As I prayed all night while laying there with Lucky on the floor my prayers did not stop until Dr. Burgess came in and talked with me. I must acknowledge Charles for his comforting words while we waited. Thank you Charles.

He asked me several questions and gave Lucky an exam. He told me that she would have to stay over night and they would let me know exactly what was going on. When I received the phone call from Dr. Burgess I was anxious to hear what was wrong with Lucky. It turned out that the wonderful Surprise Bone I bought for the dogs was stuck sideways in Lucky's intest ines and the sharp edges of the bone were cutting her intestines. Since the bone was sideways it was blocking her bowel movements and she felt very bloated. That is why she did not want to eat. Each time she push she was injuring her Intestines. Dr. Burgess and his Staff had to preform Surgery on Lucky and remove the bone. They also told me if I would have waited one more day Lucky could have died.

I was in totally shock. Every dog we ever had I always gave them bones. I never knew how harmful a bone could be to a dog. I knew not to give them chicken bones because they could splinter, but a regular average looking bone I thought would be safe. Boy was I wrong.

I wanted to Thank Dr. Burgess and his Staff for being so kind, wonderful, & caring. If it was not for them we would not have Lucky. This is the second time Lucky has been saved by God Creatures and we are so grateful to each and everyone of you. Please pass this email on to your clients and le t them know a hug and a kiss is just as good as anything else you could give your animal.

Thank you again.

God Bless
